Hello everyone!
For this discussion you will need to watch the documentary “The Castrati” and the movie “Farinelli” are in module 6. Kanopy is free for DVC students.
Note: some may find the video and subject matter to be controversial. Please email me if you would like to have an alternate assignment. However, while the subject matter may be disturbing it does show one factual reality for some male singers during the Baroque Period – and demonstrates the extreme length a music culture may go to preserve what it considers a “beautiful sound”.
I. POST (200 or more words). 50 points.
1. Describe your first reactions to the documentary and subject matter. 2. Embed a few pictures of castrati with captions. (You can also take screenshots from the documentary or the movie)
3. Why were the castrati so famous?
4. Embed a picture of a composer who wrote songs (arias) for the castrati.
5. Who was the most famous castrato of the Baroque Period? Why?
6. Embed a music example or video of a “modern” castrato (countertenor) singing in an opera or oratorio. Note that today there are no castrati because the procedure is no longer performed. But there are singers who may sound like a castrato.
7. Explain why you would or would not have chosen to be a castrato singer during the Baroque Period. How far will someone go for their fame?
8. In today’s music/art world is there any behaviors, procedures, or trends that could be compared with the castrati tradition? 9. How has knowledge of the castrati changed or enhanced your understanding of music and art?
10. Ask a well-informed question.
