Intercultural communication skills are those that are needed while conversing or exchanging information with individuals of various racial and cultural backgrounds. Although being able to communicate in more than one language is necessary, this is not the primary prerequisite. It also necessitates acknowledging the distinct standards, social behaviours, and even mental patterns that characterize each culture. Finally, it requires perseverance to acknowledge and accommodate individual variances.
The transactional model, as discussed in the video lecture, is a model for communication between sender and receiver. Both sender and receiver are interdependent in sending and receiving the message. The circumstances and medium of communication are independent of the environment. This model works in a cycle as sometimes the receiver becomes the sender and sometimes the sender becomes the receiver. This model is mainly described for interpersonal communication because it is useless when a person is unable to listen or understand the message from the sender and they must remain active during the communication process.
The most challenging part for me while communicating with someone from a different culture is the language barrier because words and thoughts on them might get differ most of the time. Internal communications at all organizational levels can suffer from language problems. It’s possible that employees won’t be able to express their demands to managers in an effective way, team leaders won’t be able to give clear feedback, and key messages won’t be appropriately communicated throughout the organization. Small miscommunications can potentially snowball into larger, more expensive mistakes later on.
